Winter Storm #1 #2 and #3 .. March Ushers in Winter Storms and Arctic Air is Taking a Winter Vacation Down South So Button Up and Stay Warm! Who Gets Snow? Who Knows .. A Week of Winter Weather
This is a short term loop of this coming winter storm.
Watch it move East and across the US.
Snow to the North.
Rain to the South.
It doesn't really tell the whole story.
But it's a good guide to who gets what.
Today there's across the far North of the US...
Over the Next 5 days a good half of the US gets snow.
This is a large system affecting a large area.
And though everyone loves to focus on the snow...
...this is really not about the snow but the cold.
Extreme Arctic Cold moving South.
Snow is the biggest "click bait" in social media.
Write a forecast for "snow" and everyone peaks.
Even if the chance of snow is a sliver of a chance.
As in you not a chance but you can keep wishing.
Unless you live in Minnesota you are wishing it would stop!
It's raining as I type this and I mean pouring.
Heavy summer like rain in Raleigh.
But it's freezing cold and dark gray outside.
Ominous in ways.
Weather is locational.
Tell me your location I'll tell you your weather.
In Florida we stop watching hurricanes when...
...they head up for the Outer Banks.
If a hurricane heads for the GOM...
..people in Florida watch the next wave.
Ohio is in it.
Logical as it's a place that winter favors.
Ice could be a problem in many places.
The NE is expecting snow, ice and rain.
Travel is going to be affected.
Note that the NE and Rockies have snow.
And pretty much everything in between.
But the South will have severe storms.
Damaging winds and tornadoes.
Did I say tornadoes?
Already have tornado warnings in Florida.
One of my favorite places St. Marys Georgia...
...south through Jax is under a stormy warnings.
And DaBuh is watching the ocean.
Because he's always watching the surf...
...and the weather.
He's like Neptune's Guardian Weather Man :)
Neptune Beach?
Allan in NY covers NY weather.
NY and areas near NY.
Ever see that map of how New Yorkers see the USA?
It's mostly NYC ;)
But we all love NYC right?
Well I do...
Note he talks about Storm #2 and Storm #3
Isn't March coming in like a Lion?
In truth the REAL STORY is the COLD.
It's always good to follow friends who go wide.
Friends who follow the whole storm system.
Where is that air coming from???
Arctic Cold.
The North Pole.
Diving South for a Winter Vacation!
One of my all time favorite people is Larry Cosgrove.
We go way back.
Note he doesn't promise high snow totals.
He takes it apart area by area.
Day by day.
Region by region.
Note #3...
"it will get very cold over the Eastern 2/3 of the nation"
This is the story friends....
Snow is nice.
If you wanna drive to snow or fly to snow..
...go for it.
But life threatening cold is moving down into the US.
Hope you didn't give your winter coat to Good Will!
Cranky watches the storms like Larry Cosgrove as they move into the Pacific and then move across the country and sometimes he even keeps watching them as they exit the coastline and sail across the Atlantic Ocean and beyond. If you want to know what is going to happen in NJ you might want to start watching the storms as to what they do out West... way out West. What's great about Cranky is he may go out on a limb or make fun of the model circus but he owns up to his past history of Tweets and Blogs. He often (as he did today) goes back to review what he and others have said and then takes a stab at "this is where we are today" (my words) and as he so often says he often and reviews what happens and revises the forecast some and that is indeed all you can do with winter storms as winter storms form in real time. Just like that snowflake on your phone on your app it's there one day and gone tomorrow and then sometimes it snows and it's not even in the forecast. It's weather. It's why we love following it and why are are intrigued by it and why we stay up in the middle of the night to get the new model run and to see what the NHC says when they update the advisory even though we know they rarely say anything different at 2 AM.
As for me I'm watching the rain and hoping tomorrow it will be pleasant enough to go to Temple and seeing friends and hoping Sunday it doesn't rain all day and then I am going to hunker down for the really cold weather Wednesday and Thursday when it goes down into the low 20s. The house smells incredible as I made a turkey breast with small baby potatoes and carrots and I'm about to steam or roast asparagus and I made Split Pea Soup with turkey bones because it feels more like winter than it does Spring. I made a Fake Crab Loaf from Salmon and a very special, secret recipe that includes crushed Crab flavored Potato Chips from UTZ and trust me those chips have about as much real crab as I am getting snow. Artificial crab flavoring, artificial grape flavoring... we live in an artificial world in ways yet so far no one has learned how to make fake, artificial snow but if they could... they could rule the world.
That's it for me. Have a wonderful weekend and I'll update on Sunday if there is much to write about or if I have time to write and until then keep watching all the usual people you follow and I follow and they follow or just binge watch some show on Netflix under the cover if it's too cold to go outside.

Ps... I talk often on Virga and how snow shows up on the radar and you get excited and there's a snowflake on your phone weather app but nada, nothing is falling from the sky. The weather person on the TV explains how the layers of the atmosphere are very dry and it snowing up there somewhere but well it's ain't makin it down to the ground :(
Great video of virga ... of snow falling and captured on video and note ... the sky is snow free at the ground's surface. Reed Timmer is awesome. He gets the great shots and video always. And generally if you want to see snow and it's nearby and you've got mountains you need to go up to the snow... The mountains get snow, the Piedmont gets a chance of snow and the coast rarely sees snow. There are always exceptions to that rule... keep on watching the weather.
Snow falling but evaporating before hitting the ground at 7000’ west of Denver CO creating an interesting sunrise. Now it is snowing lightly. Heading west to intercept heavier snow in the mountains @breakingweather@accuweatherpic.twitter.com/hO979tCtax
Winter is BACK.... And Mean and Cold and Cat 5 Wind Chills. Some thoughts on Weather and General Hospital & Social Media
I'm back from my trip to New York. Someone in the family had surgery and they are doing well and I went in to be there for moral support and to show my love. While there I saw a few family members and did some ice cold sightseeing in the Pomona Height's area. This picture is an icy waterfall as snow up on the ledge was melting, falling into the cracks, freezing, melting, freezing and covering the plants in small icicles. It was beautiful, it was freezing cold. We drove by and I saw out of the corner of my eye what looked like a crystal plant and then realized it was covered in ice (Miami girl here...) so we drove back and the daughter that liked to chase storms with me was chasing winter views and pictures. No we didn't get out and examine it, it was freezing.
The truth is winter comes and goes and this is normal. It gets cold early, it warms up and then winter comes back like that friend you didn't expect to show back up on your doorstep or bad sushi salad! It comes back. And often when it's been unusually warm it SNAPS BACK big time. In this case it is due to warm up in many places in a few days so that's good news. People outside not dressed properly could easily die when it's this cold. That includes animals and all living things. This is one of those times when the hype is for real, but it's really for those places where the wind chills are near zero or below. Yet I know people in West Palm Beach terrified of this winter's sudden Arctic Dive who are panicking. We are the world, social media makes us all feel closer and it's not gonna be 20 degrees or feel like it in Miami but it still will feel colder than you are used to so .... so proceed accordingly.
Will see tomorrow how we survive this winter weather.
And I hope and pray people do take it seriously.
And then what?
Is this the start of something big?
A new pattern?
Or an anomaly and it warms up.
In the Carolinas snow is often promised...
...but you can rely that the rains will come.
South Florida has had a rainy, wet winter.
New York City people feel snowless..
...though they have been dusted with snow.
In the midwest they can't get rid of it.
Europe was buried under it.
And in a month or so the tulips will push up...
Spring will be upon us.
A lady in the market today said "I"m waiting for Spring"
Aren't we all?
That's the nature of the seasons....
We want them to come faster and then......
....we start praying on the next season to come fast.
Life goes on.
As for me I have been in a sort of news, weather and sports black out as where I was staying the wifi was a weak signal, my phone service went from full service to no service for no apparent reason and I was on the move often. I watched the last winter storm come rolling through into Brooklyn from the Verrazano Bridge that swayed a bit in the wind while tropical like rain came at us sidewards. Then from a tall building in Brooklyn I saw the sun come out and light up the New York City skyline. Far off on the horizon the city shone under a silver sky, through the raindrops and next to a beautiful rainbow.
On Friday we went shopping and I caught this picture.
Winter cold and mountains in the distance.
And tonight they are blanketed in snow.
Stay warm under your blankets.
I have a special satin blanket that's warm.
Well it keeps me warm I leave it on top of the covers.
What do you do to stay warm?
Drink soup?
Sip tea?

Social Media
General Hospital
GFS vs EURO
Oh Lord.... stop fighting!
Now I'm back home, under the covers watching a show on my TV on my cable that my young Millenials don't use as they do HULU and NetFlix and YouTube usually. While away I follow what happens in the world on Twitter. I also missed General Hospital which is fun to watch and have on while putting together dinner. So while away I follow what's going on in Twitter, just easier to retrieve news and follow. Got to tell you if you think Weather Twitter is bad, oh my gosh you haven't seen anything. So many haters... People holding on to obsessions on characters no longer on the show who they want them to bring back and I mean "NOW!!" showing old clips of their favorite scenes. They love Franco or hate Franco (I like him and yes I followed the actor on One Life to Live) and I don't mean just hate I mean long, long diatribes worse than arguing about Trump and Pelosi and Hilary. There is more of a Soap Opera on General Hospital Twitter than on the show and they have strong feelings about the writers who they all seem to know by name, some guy name Frank and they seem to feel someone is trying to destroy the show (oh no) and oh gosh worse than arguing over the EURO and the GFS model. I missed the big Jasam reunion which doesn't upset me much as I preferred Drew and Sam to Jason and Sam. Let's get real Sam could never totally commit to Jason and Jason always ran off to save Carly and Sonny. Drew loved Sam, brought out something soft and beautiful in her while she remained tough. This is what I don't understand about GH...they spent years building up Drew and Sam into this beautiful couple who loved each other greatly and then they ripped it away bringing back stone cold Jason and I don't get it. I watch.... I watch when I can but I don't understand. I like the Peter guy (maybe it's the name) and I don't get so emotionally involved. I don't say hateful things and attack the writers, producers and actors personally.
And the reason I bring this up is it makes me wonder what goes on in this world? Every person who has a Weather App or can watch a satellite loop thinks they are an expert meteorologist and student mets think they are all the next Jim Cantore and everyone thinks they know what will happen next and if it will snow in Cincinnati and they argue when someone (a well known reliable meteorologist) says something they don't like on Twitter such as "it probably won't snow" which basically is "OH NO!!!" an insult that in the old days someone would result in a duel at sunset by the cold river.
Social media is wonderful and fun and I've been around since the early days of AOL and the Weather Message Boards but come on people get a grip! It's not the total end of the world and the guy who plays Franco is a great actor, focus on some other character and stop begging for Anna and Duke to get back together (he was never worthy of her anyway) and stop making Laura into the next matronly Monica who can be grandmother and matriarch of the family, she may be mayor but she's a bit boring like this... give her something fun to do. Stop threatening mets who take away your snow and by the way Mother Nature is the problem not some met who reads the models correctly and won't promise you it's gonna snow just to get likes on Twitter (rolling eyes) and if you got a problem with the Government Shut Down or Truce... force the congress people to show up in DC because the place looked like a Ghost Town on Monday when we sailed through as if the city was closed; I checked Twitter to make sure there wasn't an alien invasion somewhere or a terror attack. Obviously no one is really working in DC just yet, waiting for the Super Bowl to be over and go back to digging into their boots and saying "NO!!" the way my grandson does when you offer him chicken!
Social media can be the best thing that ever happen or the worst. Be part of the solution not the problem.
Stay warm, before you know it I'll be posting on the tropics and Spring will have burst through everywhere in the Northern hemisphere and life goes on as my friend is prone to saying (yeah I know you say that) and enjoy the music.
In a world before HULU and NetFlix and YouTube and the EURO model and the GFS model and in a world where only friends argued if Luke and Laura should be a Super Couple because well he raped her before they became lovers and Franco had a brain tumor removed and he's not the character he played on One Life to Live anymore....
Good to be home, at least for this week anyway.

Dreaming of Tropical Dreams on a cold night in the Carolinas
Ps Life does go on after our first loves (tho Laura was married to Scotty before Luke so maybe Luke was her second love but I digress) and whether Anna is with Robert or Duke (he died, really) or her new love who she is cute with .. life goes on. She was really young back then.... so let's look back on Laura and Luke way before we had great weather models we could argue about.
And when it comes to Anna... that actress can dance.
See she can dance with anyone....
But......before life at General Hospital she was in one of the most iconic movies ever
Keep on dancing......... but leave that Frank guy alone on General Hospital and stop fighting!
Thanksgiving Day Forecast.... Frigid Temperatures for the Macy's Day Parade... Starbucks Latte VS Frappe Unless You Live in Florida - Winter Make Up :)
That's today.
November 20th, 2018.
The year winter came early.
Talking mittens, gloves, hat, scarf ... stay home inside?
Stay home sipping hot chocolate under a cover ;)
The Parade is on TV you know :)
I spent my lifetime watching it on TV.
You'll survive I promise..
21 degrees for Thursday.
Oh wait that was yesterday's forecast.
Look below.... now it's down to 19 degrees!!!
Check out Thursday's Low above. 19 degrees
Ya...that's winter weather not fall temperatures.
Sometimes you have to throw out the rule book and deal with what is and not what should be. It's like when a hurricane forms in June or a strong Tropical Storm pops up in May... you can't say "hey it's not Hurricane Season yet" you have to get supplies, make a plan and watch Cantore in the surf on TWC until your power goes out. In NYC and NJ the powers that be erred on the side of "it's not winter yet" and we saw what a mess Winter Storm Avery made. In Maryland where they were treating the roads and being "all melodramatic" they were better prepared to deal with the snow. As my Daddy used to tell me "you gotta do what you gotta do" and that means treating this storm and the cold weather that follows it as if winter is here and the calendar is irrelevant. If we get a December thaw "nice" but if not ... button up your overcoat and do what you got to do.
If you are traveling by car make sure you have blankets, extra food and drinks with you as the walk into the service plaza or Truck Stop will make you feel like one of Santa's Elves. If you're flying, hope you don't get stuck anywhere. If you and your loved ones have asthma or any health problem make sure you bring along your medication. It's easy to say "let's hope these forecasts" are "melodramatic" but I'd err on the side of caution, hope for the best and prepare for the worst. By the way... the worst will come AFTER Thanksgiving if the long term models are correct and they are currently in good agreement! And, what concerns me is how cold the ground gets, how much it warms up when the temperatures moderate before the next polar blast comes through. I'll deal with long term models tomorrow or Thursday.
Sadly another thing I want to mention today is......... the smoke from the fires is caught up in the atmosphere and the horrible possibility of rain in California that would immediately create mudslides. I lived there ... they go hand in hand. First comes fire then comes rain and there is nothing to hold back the ground and it slides down the hill. There are many, many people missing and many more will be declared dead as the death toll rises daily. If you think hurricanes are bad... generally I'd take a hurricane any day than a hillside that goes up in flames and then what's left slides down to the valley below. So perhaps while giving thanks for all you have this year... pray ... and give some charity. I know I am and many of my friends have been doing so.
I'm not sure what I'm actually doing on Thanksgiving yet. The family isn't meeting anywhere, it's one of those years with three new babies the different couples are fending for themselves and my brother is doing something (not sure what) and my husband and I may go see my mother-in-law . . . up in Maryland in her Rest Home...or we may stay home and eat good food, watch football and buy presents for Chanukah which comes early this year the same way winter is coming early. Road trips are always good; maybe I'll take in a movie . . .
I may make Turkey Benedict for breakfast the way I did last year in Miami for the kids as we were going to Abeulita's house to be with my daughter-in-law's family. She had the baby, it's a girl named Lucy :) and I need to buy more clothes for Miss Lucy so that's my life. I may use fake hollandaise sauce or fake turkey... it came out really good last year. Or... we'll figure it out. North Carolina isn't going to be that cold, but it will be cold with a low somewhere around 25. Maybe I'll stay home by the Fake Fireplace and order presents online. Whatever you do ... do it with a smile, your favorite music and I hope your favorite team wins!
Southern Snow? Florida Snow? Winter Weather .. Low Forms.... Moves UP the Coast. Reinforcing the COLD COLD Start to 2018. Beat Goes On...
I have a few things to say about the possibility of snow in Florida. The first is it is possible and on rare occasions it does happen. The radar above shows blue near Jacksonville though I haven't heard yet of any actual reports of seeing flakes falling from the air. Secondly, this area will turn into a Winter Low Pressure system that is forecast to cause a coastal snow event in the South and make a run on the NE coast later in the same time period. Good to know that the models that argue during the Hurricane Season are just as argumentative this record breaking winter.
You can take this forecast up with the above referenced news station. Add into the mix the question of could it... would it snow in Tampa? As Tampa seems to dodge every hurricane out there you'd think it will continue dodging winter weather as well.
Note another recent record was broken from the year 1989 so that's one of the records to beat when it comes to winter weather.
So is Snow possible in Florida?
Mike lays it out on his Facebook Page.
The Maps show it IS cold enough.
Freeze Frost Line goes into North Florida.
Again this is NOT Tropical.
Just saying it again.
Note diving cold Arctic Air.
Strong supply of moisture.
Where they clash..
A Low will set up.
It bobbles about South Florida.
Then takes off towards the Carolinas.
Where exactly it goes....
Anyone's guess.
The coast has a higher chance of seeing snow.
Winter Weather.
Models arguing....
Sound familiar?
Then.... BAMB!
That's one heck of a strong pressure gradient.
And the cold flows South.
Now come on...
Doesn't this seem like the past Hurricane Season.
Here we go again...
Which model do we trust?
Epic storms.
Epic cold.
I'm wearing socks under my booties ...
It's cold. Very cold.
And I live "Down South"
Just remember.... it could be worse as we could be dealing with a remake of the last Hurricane Season. Well, maybe we will as the so far the run of record breaking weather has not settled down and the January Thaw seems a long ways away.
Always something tropical going on somewhere in the world.
It may be hard to believe while we watch a Low forming off the coast of Florida that is forecast to reinforce this bitter cold spell another week longer!
