Updated. Tornado Warning Sugar Land Texas... Storm System Headed Towards Houston Now Tornado Watch UP---. Halloween and Wicked Weather in the South Coming to Your State Soon ... What's Your Favorite Candy? What's Your Favorite Costume? Twister Movies... And Hollywood Inspiration

Really feels like some sick joke.
A Tornado Warning in Sugar Land Texas on Halloween.
Lot's of tricks Mother Nature has up her sleeve.
This storm is moving towards the Houston area now.

Don't say I didn't warn ya..
Been much talk on this system the last few days.
But it probably got lost in the news cycle.

Thought I'd put this up as it's good to remember.
Halloween comes with a treat...
..tomorrow has some tricks in store.
Or late tonight in some places.
Good read below if you are in the areas above.

As for me I spent the day at the Mall.
Very early holiday shopping.
Big family....gotta start early!
I may go as an Angel for Halloween ;)

Oh and I voted

* * *

This is foreshadowing..........
But this post is really about Halloween.
Halloween and the movies...
And weather... of course.

A kind of cult classic. You either love it or hate it. But everyone loves to be scared by movies with tornadoes in them. People who won't watch "thriller movies" will sit spellbound through movies with mean tornadoes that rain down hail or metal and as long as the twister is spinning people are mesmerized.

Why I don't know. Don't blame it on Twister, blame it on the Wizard of Oz that held a generation spellbound and then held their children spellbound as well. Was it the "yellow brick road" or the "bluebirds flying?" or the "wicked witch of the west" an iconic forever symbol of a wicked witch. Of course Glinda is always the good witch, but that's not how most people dress up for Halloween.

In vivid color and ruby shoes Dorothy and Toto entered a world where they were protected by the Scarecrow and her other friends from the Wicked Witch of the West.

In 1996 a movie was made with special effects that made the sounds of the Twister come alive and with some comedy, romance and a measure of terror audiences were held spellbound once again. And thousands of kids went online into weather chat rooms looking to be meteorologists. True too. Most didn't but some did and the legacy continues. Listen to that Twister growl... sounds you would normally hear in an old classic like "The Birds" but this was Mother Nature showing her mean side.

Red inside is green is NOT good.

allfcsts_loop_ndfd.gif (799×559)

This coming week Mother Nature may once again show her mean side along the Deep South and along the Gulf of Mexico states as warm air rushes up to meet a cold front. It won't have a "name" but it may produce tornadoes and severe weather and in some places it's possible it will come in the dark of the night.

Wouldn't it be lovely if Superman could save the day and protect us from Mother Nature when she's in a bitchy, witchy mood the way he saved us time and again from Lex Luthor? Lex Luthor always trying to control the weather, because he knew if you could control the weather it gives you the ultimate edge.

In truth Weather People try to save you all the time, but until the sky begins to get dark, the wind starts to blow and your App or WhatsApp goes crazy no one takes them seriously :(

One thing I learned in North Carolina is that for some odd reason.... nighttime tornadoes happen in Raleigh more than any other time of the day. Kind of the reverse of in Camelot where it only rains at Midnight. And in parts of the South severe weather could be a big problem, yet everyone is thinking on Hurricane Season leaving us and Winter arriving soon on the scene. This Autumn may end up being the Twister Season that went whoosh with the wind this past Spring when they usually appear out on the Plains. But in the Fall that happens also, as warm Gulf of Mexico air rushes up towards diving fronts and when there is a strong Southern Jet setting up .... get ready because we may have an Autumn to remember with dangerous weather.

http://origin.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/allfcsts_loop_ndfd.gif

Hurricanes don't work as well in most movies as do Earthquakes and Tornadoes.

Watch the weather carefully this Autumn and while you are watching perhaps the 2018 Hurricane Season will squeeze out one last storm somewhere.

Something to think on while eating candy or drinking punchy drinks or dressed up as your favorite Super Hero. Does anyone dress up as Kryptonite I wonder? Isn't it funny that it's green like the Emerald City? And the planet probably blew up when some bad guy like Darth Vader who hit Alderan with the Death Star that actually was green and then the planet exploded in a million pieces.

Where would Halloween be without Hollywood and candy?

Have a wonderful time wherever you are and whatever you do even if you sit up at home watching old movies or listening to broadcasts of the War of the Worlds. Really the day before Halloween and no one wondered on that? Hmnnn  It was a different world. The biggest "fake news story" of them all.

https://www.livescience.com/63958-war-of-the-worlds-aliens.html

Whatever world you are in today and tonight enjoy it. And watch out for severe weather approaching as it will. Oscar is off to see the Wizard faster than a speeding bullet and wicked weather is coming to the South over the next few days. Be prepared for it. Party today, prepare tomorrow!

Ps ... as for me... maybe a flapper or maybe Cat Ballou. Lord knows the shoe fits :) Would anyone realize I was Cat Ballou? Yeah, someone would. Either way it's about having fun. Fun is good. There's another things in the world that are not fun. Today is a good day to have fun. 50 seconds or so in one of my favorite scenes... iconic! Ha!

Why Deal With Winter? Move South Even IF Just For The Winter.... Carolina is Good... Snows and Then Melts Fast. South Florida Truly Paradise. Live Like It's Margaritaville ALL The Time!

Just why?
I don't get why people live there.
I've been to Boston (in the summer)
Even August can be cold!
But in the winter?

Granted my Great, Great Grandparents came from over there, up north where it was cold all the time even in the summer (by Florida standards) and dealt with winter for a good part of the year. But over time we evolved, migrated and some distant relative heard about a "beautiful place after a long sea voyage" and he docked in Key West and found it good and put down roots. He opened a tinware shop, dabbled in tobacco and invested in Real Estate. Several generations later my son sells Real Estate in places that truly look as if they came from a magazine touting the beauty of the Garden of Eden. I mean look at this picture below. You could be lying on that chase lounge feeling the rays of the sun (with sun screen of course) listening to the gulls circling high up above with a view worth every dollar you spend. Why do people live where winter can last more than the three calendar months?

My great, great uncle sold real estate in Tampa.
Anna Maria Island and Holmes Beach.

Yes once every few decades there's a hurricane.
Once every winter there ARE Nor'easters
3 Nor'easters this March.
Another on the way...
Why can't they just call them:
Northeasters????

I miss hurricane season.
I miss watching west bound tropical waves.
I enjoyed the snow flakes that fell yesterday.
They are mostly melted.
You know why?
Cause we live Down South!!
Go Carolina!

It snows. It melts.
The sun is out the next day.

Soon I'll be back in Florida.
Can drive it in one day easily!!

Apparently the Gov of CT is on...
Apparently CT is closed.
Amtrak isn't running.

Just why do you need to be that person?

Okay it's a lot of money for a lot.
But oh my goodness what a lot it was..

The breeze on that lot is awesome.
A warm, soft, balmy breeze.
Think about it.
Move South.

Look at that house.
Beautiful.
Palm trees.
Sun.
Green Yard!
No snow.....

Great schools!!
Kids playing outside all year.

Just do it.
Live the Florida Lifestyle.
Even if just for the winter.
Be a Snowbird!!!
Fly South...

Dig out, get your power back and find a place in paradise. Even if it's just for the winter... seriously the only people who should be out in a Nor'Easter are people being paid to who work for The Weather Channel!

Besos BobbiStorm.

Ps... On any given day my other son Moe and his wife and baby are having breakfast here in Hollywood Florida. They get in the car ...drive around the block (hang left at Hollywood Blvd) and order coffee and breakfast with a view. This can be your view....

Just across the street from Margaritaville!

UPDATED! Winter Storm Warnings For the South. Atlanta to Raleigh I95 I85 in it. Check for Updates Often. Buy What You Need & Hunker Down. Stay OFF the Highways...

Brief Thursday Night Update.
Winter Storm Warning Across Much of the South.

Models come in with new solutions.
More complicated than it looks.
Though that's the plot line in the Carolinas always.

Aside from the snow estimates vs sleet estimates.
The line always goes through Wake County.
Does the system thread the needle or go wide right?
Or wide left?

Then there is the model discussion on sub zero weather.
Raleigh rarely gets single digits so that would be historic.

Again just noting what the models are implying.
Models imply and often contradict.
That's not just hurricane season but all seasons.
It's a weather thing...

So how low will it go in Raleigh?

1 degree?

Hmnnn.

VS

You see the problem?
Another good local voice ....

Looks like an igloo a little bit.

Seriously the problem here is this is ALL about modeling.
Winter Storms like this go incognito until they appear.
Almost magically "THERE IT IS!!!"
Til then you don't see it.
Very different from Hurricanes.

I chase hurricanes.
I do not chase snow storms.
I bundle up and stare endlessly...
as white solid stuff falls from the sky.
Still a Miami girl up in NORTH Carolina.

What will I see Friday Night?
Hard to say.
Frozen precipitation.
Snow.
Maybe some sleet.

That yellow and fuchsia line is right near Wake County
And the storm is not all that visible just yet.

Where's the storm?

I had a best friend, chiropractor.
He'd work on me for headaches.
He'd put both hands on either side of my head.
Hold them there and then take the away.
Then he'd look down at me sort of upside down ...
and say...
"Where's the pain?"
I'd giggle.
He was annoying.

I feel like that about Winter Storm Helana right now.

Where's the storm?

wv-animated.gif (720×480)

Decided to screw it and watch Nashville tonight ;)

While looping.

Time will tell........
Stay tuned for a morning update on

! ! ! !
If you keep reading you'll here more in depth discussion...

Weather headlines today in Hurricane Country are all about SNOW!

Some good voices below to listen to...

The concern on the temperatures following the slow is real.
Usually in the South it snows and melts.
In this case it won't melt so fast.

And again it's not that Southerners do not understand the snow.
We understand it trust me. We are just not prepared for it!
We don't have snow tires or chains....
... and small roads don't get plowed.
We are not set up for long term snow.
And budgets don't always allow for snow plowing.
In Upstate NY it snows... when it stops...
the first person on the road is driving the snow plow.
Not so down here ... few snow plows.
And they use them on the major roads.

And then there are the naysayers who don't believe it will snow.
A lot like people with hurricanes.
So often the storm fizzles out.
So often that person gets stuck on the frozen road ...

(That's a very steep hill the pic doesn't do it justice)

People are already buying bread.
Well to be fair people who like Dave's Killer Bread ;)

Those shelves will get more bare this evening.
Eggs, milk and I see lots of french toast in my crystal ball!
It's a Carolina Thing I can't explain it really.

But get to the store early is my best advice.
Prepare for someone to possibly lose power...
Keep phones charged & charger sticks fully charged.
Stay home, be safe, hunker down.
It will melt eventually...

And please check with the NWS often.
They update actually faster than the NHC in real time.

Understand I am using Raleigh below as an example because I live here and the storm is coming here. All you have to do is follow the same method of researching on Google and find your own forecast from the NWS. IF you are reading my long read blogs, you can work your way through the NWS forecast discussion. It is what the local weather people in your area use to put out their brief, graphic laden on air forecast for you. It's also what goes into the forecast with your Apps or hysterical hyped comments on your Facebook feeds preaching snow armageddon and we know we all have that one relative right?

NWS Raleigh Forecast Discussion
NWS Atlanta Forecast Discussion
NWS Wilmington Forecast Discussion

They will all get you to a link for the discussion for your area.
If you are not already proficient in surfing for weather news.
That's my best advice.
No one does your local weather like the NWS.

Okay I was a bit backwards this morning....
...but note it still got me to the same place.

Usually it's the first link.

In my case this is what NWS says this morning.

I highlighted the blue part for you.
Also the red color shows this was an update.
Another point I'm trying to make.
The NWS updates in real time.
Note the LAST LINE and word "conservative"
That's not a political comment but a heads up!

We are currently under a Winter Storm Watch.
That's like being in the 5 Day Cone with a Hurricane Watch up.

Translating from Hurricanease to Winter Talk ;)

From Mike's weather page.
Note the intense reds outlining the state of NC.
Look at the Great Lakes.
Looks like a fuchsia palm tree!

We go back to #winterwinning this weekend in the South.
Any variation in the storm track can make a big difference.
As the satellite loop shows this is a West to East event.
That could move further South and sock Fayetteville.

Note their Newspaper shows that well.

Note this includes FORT BRAGG.
Also the parts of  I95 that were slammed by Hurricane Matthew.

Let's look at a loop

latest_wv_loop.gif (535×440)

See how this system is moving West to East.
Where the flat bands of snow set up is everything.
Again the NWS said they were being conservative for now.

The variation in how different places are handling this is evident.
TWC shows single digits in the Raleigh area or close to it.
I woke up this morning to everything from 6 degrees to 15 degrees.
TWC says 6 degrees today for Sunday morning.
You can remember that on Sunday if they were right...
Different apps, different sources, different calls...
Some conservative others a bit hyped perhaps.
We will know better Sunday morning.

If the placement of the Low varies from the models..
It can mean Raleigh gets slammed or Rocky Mount gets it.
Or Wilmington and Down East like we say here gets it.
Could Myrtle Beach see snow?
Who knows for now?

So everyone needs to prepare for significant ground coverage of snow.
Accumulation of snow in a part of the South not used to that.
Monday morning school cancellations.
Possibly late school starts most of the week or cancellations.
By Tuesday or Wednesday we may be tired of seeing snow.
But for now I'm excited.

Every town has it's official source for news.
WRAL is it here for many.

Another view of the storm totals below:

Think of this as a snow cone.

Speaking of snow....

Here's a recipe I have never tried.
But some swear by it.

Google just gives me this recipe ;)

Pictures ;)

Understand before I go for now this storm affects the South.
The highways and byways of the our lives.

I95
I85

Atlanta to Raleigh...
New York to Miami ...

Are you driving to Miami for warmer weather?
You may have some problems in the Carolinas.

Plan accordingly.
I'll be back later for updates.

Hurricane forecasting is easy compared to snow forecasting.
Especially in the Carolinas or Georgia.
Nothing is ever certain until it begins to fall.

If you are flying or taking Amtrak check for updates.

If the highway closes there are food shortages.
Mail, UPS... weather affects everything.

Ps if you are traveling keep blankets, drinks, snacks with you...
...cause Mother Nature is on the rampage this weekend!

(worth reading their story trust me)
And an incredible bread I found in Seattle..
..that has arrived in the Raleigh Triangle area.
