Otto Crosses Over Into the Pacific on Black Friday

Otto 60 mph and moving West.
Back in the water again.

Worth noting Otto has moved into the Epac

Otto broke many records.
Otto made the land crossing intact.
Some of that land is marsh and includes a large lake.
There's land but also marsh, lakes, grasslands and swamps.

http://costa-rica-guide.com/nature/ecozones/wetlands/

It chose a good place to cross over.

You can see how little land there actually is there.
And beautiful wetlands people go to explore.
Beaches galore but also grasslands.
Think low country in a way.

Otto's signature while crossing over.

Could this have helped Otto to sustain and even intensify?
Time will tell and it will be studied.
There are few analog storms to study for that exact location.
Seems it's a lot like Tampa and Jax.
Hurricanes nearby but rarely do they make landfall..

So keep watching.

Some models boomerang it back.
Most do not.

Keep watching.
And have a wonderful holiday weekend.
Give thanks...

Otto Makes Landfall. Sat Images of Smoke From Fires in Israel. 7.0 Earthquake in Central America!

When it rains it pours. Otto has made landfall near the town of San Juan in Nicaragua according to the NHC with 100 MPH winds. That's a first for that region officially and at the same time a strong earthquake registered nearby. Crazy but true.

avn-animated.gif (720×480)

7.0 Earthquake off West Coast of Central America.

There have been similar cases. They are rare.
Happens. Officially no correlation.

Says it all....

Nice to see Drudge is back to weather and earthquakes..

Sadly there are fires in Israel burning.
Some are forest fires but others started in cities.
Arson has been seen as a new form of terrorism.
Some may be forest fires. Time will tell.
Nice to see people coming together to help others.
Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Russia and a few other countries..
..sent planes in to fight the fires.

I have friends living in the affected areas.
I wasn't aware as there is little on TV or regular news.
Friends were passing information on Facebook.
Pictures on Twitter.

Good to see international cooperation.

In other news it's snowing in parts of the USA.
Not a lot of parts and its 72 degrees in Raleigh.
Windows open, house smells incredible.

Otto broke records with this landfall.

And lastly there may be a fly in the ointment with Otto.

Hmmmn.

Please read my previous blog if you have not done so today.
Some good thoughts to ponder on regarding Thanksgiving.

Time to make a salad and start eating..

Stay tuned.

Cat 2 Hurricane Otto Making Thanksgiving Day Landfall. And My Thoughts On Being Thankful!!

Impressive.

In motion. Incredible

avn_lalo-animated.gif (720×480)

Don't mean to bring you all down but this is a Killer Hurricane.

My friend Jim Williams would point out the deaths were from flooding.
Yes, so true. Flooding caused by Otto.
Rare to see this misery there in November.
But it does happen. Martha 1969
5 fatalities. November.
Landfall in Panama not Nicaragua tho both got weather.

Otto is a dangerous hurricane.
Usually M N and O storms are a problem for the Caribbean.
Mitch for instance. Matthew caused trouble as well.
Jamaica keeps getting lucky.
Jamaica has much to be thankful for.............

Wow, wow Otto... Look at Otto! Cat 2 and running out of room while he tries to make Cat 3. He should stay where he is now, however he was not forecast to be a Cat 2 just a minimal 75 MPH hurricane so let's see how the day plays out. As for me I'm typing this while watching the Macy's Day Parade with one of my daughter-in-laws who is online. I used to watch the parade with my baby brothers in bed making a lot of noise annoying my mother who wasn't much into parades. Actually, my mother wasn't much into Thanksgiving. My Aunt made big meals or we went out to eat somewhere. My father would take me out to a Cafeteria usually around Thanksgiving so I could enjoy a "real meal" you know with the dressing and mashed potatoes and gravy. When my kids growing up I made huge meals, decorated the turkey and we had fun. Meyer kids generally have fun, just saying. But now I'm online with my brother in Greece listening to the song he sent me and talking to my daughter-in-law on messenger!! 2016 ... so much to give thanks for!!! So much!!!!

We can watch hurricanes on satellite imagery with incredible models that help in early warnings for areas that years ago had no warnings before they were slammed with deadly storm surge. I think that's something to give thanks for ...

And I can talk to my kids on Whatsapp, Snapchat, FaceTime and regular old messenger from Facebook while doing anything except handling dangerous equipment. Who knew the Internet had so much in common with Dimetapp? That said... I can watch the parade, sip Nespresso Latte and write while in bed under the warm covers as I balance the phone on one knee next to the laptop. Later we can be together on Facebook Live. Gotta love 2016 on so many levels for the ways we stay in touch on Twitter after "migrating" from AOL :) (for u know who you are...)

I think you get where I'm going.... There is so much to give thanks for and as always it's what you focus on in life. I was taught my a spiritual mentor friend a saying from a Rebbe from years back. In spiritual matters you look up at people who have more than you to be more like them spiritually on any level even New Age "just think happy thoughts" or pray to the Lord whatever works for you. My additional thoughts here. And on material things you look at those who need and have less than you. Obviously to help them and give charity and be thankful for all you do have in your life.
www.redcross.org <--- charity="" feel="" give="" need="" p="" should="" suddenly="" the="" to="" you="">
If you spend your time always upset because you don't have as much as the next guy or gal... you are never happy. I remember growing up in Miami Beach in a very wealthy area or more so an area where some people were very wealthy and others like us lived in old, affordable mini Roaring 20s mansions that needed much work but I loved that house. We were told we had structural damage from the 1926 Hurricane that would never be fixed completely. But some neighbors lived on North Bay Road and near by Pine Tree Drive. So there was this nice kid who came over often to play with my kids who lived in a big, beautiful home on North Bay Road but it was on the landlocked side of the street (means he had a backyard not on the water) and all day from his fancy, beautifully decorated, expensive house he'd look out across the street at the larger mansion ON THE WATER that looked out on Biscayne Bay. We'd remind him he had a beautiful house. He's look sad and say "yeah but it's not the same" and I'd giggle and pray a bit that when he grows up he will look back and appreciate all he had back then on the wrong side of the expensive street.

The point again here is what you focus on ..............

People need rain in parts of the country that are in drought, that's a NEED not a want though they be wanting rain bad. People go through a whole winter and barely get snow and are sad. Some people I knew growing up would cry as kids when a hurricane turned away from making landfall in Miami. And speaking of Miami "Hey how about those Dolphins??"

Just something to think on if you are here today reading my blog on Thanksgiving. We go through years of no hurricanes and then El Nino leaves and the switch is flipped. I do think La Nina is here in some way and we will have a strong winter in some areas. I know that sounds vague, but we have to see how the storm tracks play out in real time.

And some people are already focusing on whether Paula will form...

So stay tuned and be very happy for what you DO have and maybe next year you'll have more of what is on your wish list!

Happy Thanksgiving from Raleigh where the temperature is supposed to hit 71 degrees today. Now I'm thinking we should have gone to Myrtle Beach. But making a quiet, sort of romantic candle lit dinner for tonight and planning on relaxing from the crazy whirl of social events a few days ago in Brooklyn.

I'll update later today after landfall. And landfall is coming soon. Worth noting they have it decreasing in intensity down to 70 MPH at landfall. That would mean it makes landfall not as a hurricane but as a tropical storm. Despite the climo and weather history of the region I'm not convinced it won't be hurricane status at landfall. Otto has been an over performer since day 1.

As always time will tell.

Otto Odds Bumped Back up to 90% ... Snow in NY. Winter Storm Blasts Thru East Coast. From Crown Heights Brooklyn... Windy, Cold, Brrrr

sat_wv_east_loop-12.gif (640×512)

The video above shows why the models forecast the track they do.
Look at that cold front blast through the Mid Atlantic.
Down through the Deep South.
It was windy and cool in Key West today.

If you went to Key West today.
I hope you brought socks with you!

In NY where many of our family is gathered.
We are in boots, jackets and leg warmers.
Actually we are inside away from the cold wind outside.
Yet I'm here under the covers tonight writing about the tropics.

The NHC has put a red circle over the SE Caribbean.
I keep thinking on Rudolph's nose but I digress.

Note the discussion.
Note the red X over the area where Otto may form.

Also note the round blast of cold air that moved off the East Coast.
Ball of convection down where it needs to be.

The tightly wound tropical disturbance forming in the SE Carib.
Winds pretty strong, seemingly closing off a center.

Winds equally as strong in NYC tonight.

Great site. On bottom left of www.spaghettimodels.com

Models finally taking the low road.

There's still options but the road North is blocked.
Blocked for now with high pressure.

I'll update tomorrow morning. I'm thinking if and when it gets a name it should be Tuesday or Wednesday. Maybe Monday... This is a big flooding danger for Central America.

Again as I have shown before a part of this system is in the Pacific.
Put it in motion:

rb_lalo-animated.gif (720×480)

Seems to be trying hard to come together.

As for me I'm still in Brooklyn. Visited family and friends in Flatbush today. Lent out my phone and got it back. Lent out my charger for my Ipad and did not get it back. On the list... buy new charger cord. Happens. Bought kosher meat to go back with as well as some kosher canned food unavailable in Raleigh. Relatives are flying out... Southbound to the Deep South, out West to Seattle and slowly the party is over.

Meanwhile it was freezing, windy, crazy today. Freezing windy as in I didn't go to Basil NY for breakfast :( and stayed inside. We went to Carlos and Gabbys with relatives, friends later for a late lunch/early dinner. Fun always.

http://carlosandgabbysbrooklyn.com/menu.html
In the mood for Mexican ;) in Brooklyn.

Leaves are flying about in the wind. The trees tomorrow should look a lot more bare than earlier in the week. Relatives took pictures endlessly from the World Trade Center aka Freedom Tower. Some went to Chelsea Pier for Bowling and an indoor view of the river. The Statue of Liberty can be done another time. Winter has moved in and I think it's here to stay. Some warmer days, then some colder days. In a week or two temperatures in the 40s won't seem so cold.

We were stopped at a light today and I saw the sunset over a cemetery in Brooklyn. I couldn't get to my phone fast enough it was a wild view. Sort of like this below.

Strangely beautiful.
Brooklyn is so diverse.
From Boro Park to Crown Heights.
From Sheepshead Bay to Park Slope.
Brownstones bleed colors of brown all in a row.
Old homes, new homes.
Torn down homes, rebuilt homes.
Off in the distance the view of the bridge.
Manhattan beyond the river beyond the bridge.
One son walked into Manhattan for exercise today.
Across the bridge. The windy, cold bridge.

A friend's children woke up to snow.
Up in Monsey further inland.
Unexpected as the forecast was as wind blown as the day.
The kids played.

Can you imagine going to sleep to gentle rain.
And waking up to see show covering everything?

Tomorrow we may wake up to Otto in the Tropics.

Stay tuned.
Eventually I'll be heading South again.

Ps Thanks for your patience.
It's been a blast of winter and a blast of memories made.
The idea of the AirBNB was a good one.
Go Millenials.
Go Mommy for saying "yeah go for it"
Had all the amenities of a house vs motel room or rented basement.
Clean, comfy though somewhat not totally prime time.
But then again that's this part of Brooklyn.
Old brownstones

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown_Heights,_Brooklyn

Always wonder what it was like in the Roaring 20s.
:)

Next time you're in town.
Go to Prospect Park...not Central Park ...

Otto Odds up to 80% From NHC.

Prime Time Now.
Main page Yellow X

5 Day shows the story plot line.

80% odds is pretty high.

Water Vapor Loop.

latest_wv_loop.gif (535×440)

Watch the moisture streaming North.
SW Carib

Models:

Remember yesterday when I said there were two solutions.

Worth noting part of it's moisture is in the Pacific.
Just being honest.

Orange Juice Loop shows where the moisture goes.

latest72hrs.gif (947×405)

Warm water available for tropical development.

TCHP.jpg (666×375)

And with the front moving down towards Florida.
This could bounce up towards Florida.
Note I said "could" not "would"
Just showing possibilities out there.

Translation for those of you not from Florida.
Focusing on the "now" heavy rains will affect Central America.
Yet the picture is worth a thousand words.

Ever hear the term "swan song" ??
2016 may be going out with a bang tropically speaking.

There are still two solutions.
Or perhaps... the one in between?
Will they come together on a NNW movement?

Much like the country right now we are very divided.
GFS vs EURO
What will Otto do?
Stay tuned.

We actually have 3 names for this system online.
Confusing.

Hmmmm
Right now it's listed as 3 different names.
3 Faces of Otto?

Floater shows that above vs 90L

NRL shows it as 90L

And the floater that's up is listed differently.

NHC kind of mixing it up there.

What bothers me more is taking off the Dvorak.
I'm old school. I like it.

Sort of mixing it up here today.

Otto. Odd.
Not over yet.
This is 2016..
It's the year of the unexpected.
Remember Julia forming over land?

The set up is below.
A cold front.
Draped across Florida.
An area in the Caribbean.

Good thing this is not October.

But this is not 2006 it is 2016.
Ten years later.

This is the Swan Song of 2016.
The year that brought you Alex, Colin and Matthew.
Otto would be the Swan Song.
Should it form as it is forecast to get it's shot.

What is most odd in ways here is ...
So many names for one system.

The 2007 Hurricane Season had some odd similarities.
Storms forming close in.
Low riders.
Each season is different but worth a look.
It actually ended with Olga.

Otto. Odd. Are we finished?

I'll update later today.
I want to see the next set of model runs.
And I want to see how the frontal boundary evolves.

;)

This is the middle of a memory...
...forming in real time!

Ps. A look back at Noel a Swan Song sort of storm.

http://hurricaneharbor.blogspot.com/2007/11/quick-thoughts-on-tropical-storm-noel.html

I want to say it's good to look back sometimes. Noel on Miami Beach was a last blast of tropical action. I got sandblasted at the beach and there was street flooding on Miami Beach. Yes back when we had flooding on Miami Beach. Miami and most of Florida is at sea level. Without seal level rise we had problems so each year that goes by it seems to rise a little higher.
