Houston Looks Like a Strong Hurricane Hit. Thunderstorm? Derecheo? WTH Really.... Power Out for "DAYS" - At Least 4 Dead. Tropical Discussion.

On the Left yesterdays damages.
On the right Hurricane Ike.

I really don't have the right words to use, nor do I want to use words bouncing around my head as to what the hell happened in Houston yesterday. NWS will do their research to decide how much was strong straight line winds and how much may have been tornadoes briefly touching down, dancing through through Houston. After Wilma, when Miami and Ft. Lauderdale had very much similar damage in downtown skyscrapers that were supposedly going to be safe in a hurricane were not. Weird Science will explain to you when wind swirls fast through skyscrapers the wind speeds can pick up faster than they would be otherwise. The wind swirls and snakes and it only takes a few windows to blow out create a debris pattern caught up in those snaking, swirly winds and basically the damages after Wilma were blamed on debris from elsewhere picking up missles flying in the hurricane wind shattering a few weak windows that should have held strong. Remember the hurricane proof glass is meant to hold up to a certain wind speed, but there's always a weak link somewhere.

KHOU tells the story.
Note the side of that building was ripped off!

Again, the research hasn't been done but this was not forecast to be anywhere near as strong as this and yes IF it was a tornado in the metro area that could account for the damages. Meanwhile, across a wide area from Houston to Louisiana there is much tree debris down and power out. What was it? What caused this sort of intense damage? Power towers are built not to fall over in strong thunderstorms nor your run of the mill weak hurricane or most hurricanes.

The take away from this should be....
Know that when a Metro area (they call downtown there the Metro area) is hit or any congested area with dense population, know your power will be out for a long time.

In 2005 Katrina hit Miami and took down a ton of tree debris and the power went whoosh in the wind. In any other year Katrina hitting Miami would have been THE big news story weather wise, but as many Miami Hurricanes do it went on to slam into Louisiana (and Mississippi) and did way more damage as it passed over the very hot water in the Gulf of Mexico and intensified into a stronger monster than the relatively weak one that took the power grid down in Miami. Rita, Wilma followed that year and one month I missed more than 2 weeks of work which as a divorced, single mother with bills to pay was not easy especially after buying food supplies for the hurricane itself. Backyward sheds were blown from my neighborhouse into mine .... typical patio screens went were ripped, ficus trees tip over and take most of the lawn with them but......being honest............the big question was "how could the power grid go down from a relatively low end hurricane not a major" and this storm in Houston drives that question home again.

In the tropics nothing is happening.
EPAC has 2 yellow circles.
They may combine.
Might develop.
Wind Shear there tho...

Today's weather below:

From Windy.com

This awesome loop is from ....
Tropical Tidbits my site of the day.

Levi Cowan's site has pretty much everything.
Satellite imagery, models and his blog.
He blogs where tropics come alive.

When it's quiet....
...good time to learn how to use the site.
It's more than just one model ...
...an awesome site by a fantastic meteorologist!
Dr. Levi Cowan.

My father was a Real Estate Appraiser and a term used often in appraisals for was "highest and best use" and that's a term you need to think on as I jokingly told Windy.com on Twitter I get used to one or two of my favorite filters and forget to use all the filters. I'm sure many of you who use Mike's site do the same thing, you have your favorite grids but did you know there are pages behind the main page and miles of links to go before you sleep!

Always watch for close in development this time of year, if wind shear weakens as the water is hot and anything can pop! But, will it pop before Mid June? Time will tell. Stay tuned!

Mike talking on smoke from Mexican Fires

Oh and special thanks to Mike, as it's better than muscle relaxers to just sit here and type and listen to Mike talking about life, weather, his daughter graduating (oh my gosh how time flies) and for people like me who have known Mike back when we were all on one or two of the few sites online on message boards, way before the world is the way the world is now. Mike's a player but he makes his work look like a game, but he works hard and he's very real and gives credit where credit is due often online, promoting others and teaches many how to use incredible sites such as Weather Nerds that is awesome but for many newbies hard to use. Many friends have told me they learn much from watching his videos so thanks to much Mike. Too much news in the world today, nice to turn it off for an hour and listen to Mike talk on Hurricane Expos and importance of getting a generator and getting hurricane supplies now while it's quiet.

The Mayor of Houston just gave an interview live and made it clear that the death toll of 4 people is currently and it could go higher.

Take Hurricane Prep Seriously!!

16 Days Til Hurricane Season! Will Aletta Form in EPAC? Early African Waves… Severe Wxr Today! Windy.Com Awesome Site!!

Going wide with Windy.com today.
Yes, my site of the day.

This is the GFS and you can see the golds and a drop of red in the EPAC that may or may not become Aletta the first name on the list in the Eastern Pacific. The blue line that travels across the bottom of this map, from the EPAC, through South America and across the Atlantic to Africa is an early, busy, steady signal from the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone AKA ITCZ.  And, off the SE coastline convection hovers, lingers on Monday May 30th, 2024 and many wonder if the NHC will blink and put up a yellow circle in that area over the next few days.

I really love Windy.com because it offers so many options and it's easy to switch between models and as you search around looking for possible tropical development or tornado weather or maybe just looking for the best day to leave to drive down to Florida for a family event. It's awesome in the Winter, but the Hurricane Season is why we are here so ........putting it out there as a site to check out if you don't already. You can use it without being a member, but it's easier for many than other incredible sites I'll mention that have a harder learning curve for newbies.

On Tuesday Morning.
Looks like Aletta may happen in EPAC.
More a maybe off Carolian coastline.
There's snow in Rocky Mtns.
At high elevations of course.
Beautiful up there, truly.

Using the temperature filter...
With muddy orange/red being HOT
It's worth nothing the Yucatan is hot.
Cuba is hot and adjacent Florida is hot.
Or according to my kids it's HOT HOT HOT

It's worth reminding you that as the land heats up, the water heats up and as water temperatures near the Yucatan, Bay of Campeache and Florida get HOT HOT HOT the chances for tropical development rises exponentially for close in pop up, home grown tropical systems.

So how HOT is the Miami area??

If you click on this image and read through the data, or just read what Jim said here you'll see that Miami broke a record yesterday for mean temperature of 88.5. While you are wondering how important the "Mean Temperature" really is, may I add the record it broke was from 2017! Do I need to remind you how hot the water was and how low the shear was in 2017 and which hurricanes made landfall?

Harvey
Maria
Irma

To name just 3!
Look how many there were....
...think how many 2024 could have.
Wind Shear will make or break forecasts.
Stay tuned.

As for today....
Pay attention to your local WXR!!

Tropical Weather Outlook Begins Again Today - EPAC 30% Yellow Severe WXR Today in TX/OK & Carolinas.... Central FL! Mike's Spaghetti Model is the Site of the Day. Hurricane Prep... Just Do It!

Official Start of the TWO Graphics from NHC.
Tropical Weather Outlook
Nothing for 7 days....
Always good to see the graphics up!

As for the EPAC 30% chance
Yellow Circle.

Little orange ball there on sat imagery!

While the Atlantic Hurricane Season begins on June 1st, the Tropical Weather Outlook AKA the TWO begins today. The Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season aka EPAC starts TODAY and there is a 30% chance of something possibly developing, as I have mentioned in previous blogs.

Everyone waits to see the graphic at the top of the page revert back to official NHC graphics for the Hurricane Season, vs the off season graphic. Every weather person views this differently of course, those who have been slammed by a hurricane that chased them to their home or rode out Andrew in a bathtub with a mattress over their head dreads this day, and they order Mylanta or Tagamet whichever works for them on Amazon as their first act of hurricane prep! For the chasers, the trackers and the researchers this is like they can suddenly smell the coffee the lady in the next apartment is brewing, eyes wide open waiting to see what happens next.

You can compare this to Miami Dolphins NFL fans finding out that the "Fins" 2nd game of the NFL Season we will be hosting the Buffalo Bills on Thursday, September 12th available on Amazon to view! Yes, it's far away but every Fin Fan's heart races a little faster and a smile is on their face, until of course they realize that means we will play Buffalo IN Buffalo later in the season when winter weather could be a messy factor. May I remind everyone that September 12th is fairly close to Prime Time in the Hurricane Season so keep that in mind also. A good example of how weather matters and impacts every part of our lives!

As for the weather today, we are still in Spring Severe Weather Season with several areas highlighted for possible severe storms and or tornadoes!

Center Square on Mike's Page shows today's concerns.
Tx/Ok Panhandles in orange...
Carolinas in Gold
Central FL in it too!

A good reminder that Mike's site has lots of information on it from Hurricane Prep to companies that sponsor him and that give his fans huge discounts on everything from roofing to generators.

You can see here as well why the EPAC begins early, as the water is warmer and the purple splotches highlight areas to watch on this map, just as the NHC main page gives them a 30%. Note also that there is a purple splotch down the road off the Carolinas. Time will tell. But, by watching these different sites and listening to Mike and others on YouTube and reading this blog you usually get a heads up to anything that might possibly, maybe become something to officially watch for . Try and stay away from sites that say things like "Dangerous Hurricane Season Could Begin with Tropical Trouble in Florida (or Carolinas or GOM) as hyperbole and good alliteration usually is just click bait and attempts to get more hits and followers.

Lastly, a good read on the NHC main page every day is the long discussion that reads like a tropical travelogue ;) of where there's a fast flow, a dying frontal boundary and even a patch of squally weather in the Eastern Atlantic that the French Weather Bureau is issuing Gale Warnings for and yes I do love alliteration but how it is used is important! See blue highlighted area below.

An example.
Really you will learn much if you read it!
It often "hints" at things that pop up down the road!

Hurricane Site of the Day:

Good place to start....

Proud to have my blog up on the top of the page.

Signs the Tropics Are Waking Up ... Just in Time For Hurricane Season. Are You Ready?

A look at the Close in Regions.

If somethings gonna happen.

It's gonna happen here....

Oh Look!!

As I've been saying for a while, the EPAC looks as if it wants to start up on time this year and development there is possible. Watching areas such as this "Brew" is like having your Nespresso machine set to some odd "Slow Brew" cycle that doesn't exist but if it did it would be exactly like this. This time of year when pieces of energy get into place and signs show up in the environment that we are almost there, things stop and go into slow motion and glide slowly as if it'll never happen and then it does. Last year was an odd season for the EPAC but everything is odd these days so you sometimes gotta go with the flow. Mother Nature knows what she is up to even if we wonder sometimes.

Severe Weather Season in the South lit up.
Lil dots of color in the EPAC.
The area highlighted above at the top of the blog...
...has the best chance to develop.
Only issue is the atmospheric flow is fast there.

Note how fast the flow is....
If something forms it could be interesting.
In the Atlantic basin there's SAL

From Africa to Central America.
It's taking the low road today.
As hot as the Atlantic is it's also dusty.
Cloaked in SAL.
Mitigating factor.
Not ready yet!

But you can see on this map from Windy.
ITCZ set up from EPAC to Africa (low still there)

Tuesday May 21st.
Windy.com (great site)
Area over the South forms into something...
....soemthing happening here.
Does it get attention from NHC
Or do they just let it go?
Sometimes we get Subtropical Storms here.
This time of year.

Just pointing it out the modeling.
Either way area on either side of FL
Commonly can create Home Grown.
Surprises!

As for surprises....
...how bout those auroras in the Keys.

Sometimes Mother Nature surprises us.
Northern Lights in Florida Keys.
Mike Theiss as always awesome!

Stay tuned....
Totally awesome.

Link for Hurricane Prep.
Who knew Food and Wine had a Hurricane Food Site!
Remember this my friends....
When the power goes out you either have a generator or you don't.
They can be fairly cheap these days tho cheap ones do less.
Then again a cheap one will charge your phone, work a fan or small electric cooking tools.
So some lists will have things like "spaghetti sauce" to go with the pasta you bought.

What I want to highlight here is if you are in an area where a strong hurricane has made landfall, and the general supply chain breaks down and often the first things to arrive to the area are water and ice. It takes a long while for grocery stores to restock, so some supply lists are for when you have power but no where to shop for groceries. Other lists are for how to survive a catastrophic landfall such as an axe to get to the roof in case your neighborhood floods and a small raft...

Know your area's own unique concerns.

Strong Squall Line Races Thru Cities Prone to Early Season Hurricanes. Line Racing Fast East Thru N FL - Carolina Coast Still Getting Storms.

This line is more than half way to Jax.
From Tally to Valdosta Oaks are down.
Power is out.
Everything came together today in a bad way.
Came together FAST and it's on the move.

This region is one that often gets slammed in June with an early Tropical Storm moving in from the Gulf of Mexico creating squall lines that look similar to this and yet today it's a wicked, fast moving complex of severe weather and tornado warned cells. It'll take a little while to sift through the damage reports and see exactly what hit where... but if a limb of your beautiful oak tree is laying across what is left of your car you don't really want to know the details of what happened but how to fix it fast... if possible.

From St. Marks Florida along the coast to Valdosta and on it's way to Savannah and Jacksonville, severe weather has been wild all week and is happening live as I type.

Savannah often gets hit by hurricanes that come through the backdoor more than through the front door!

This area in general is one unique area and crosses state lines. North Florida has more in common with parts of Southern Georgia than with South Florida. I know this area well, generations of my family have lived in the Tallahassee/Quincy area.  Many people are moving up there from South Florida to get away from the traffic and other daily troubles of life in paradise; most don't realize they can get more tropical weather directly than Miami does in any given year. And, as we move closer to June (now 22 days away) know we will be looking at this area to see if anything blows up in the Gulf of Mexico that's tropical.

As for the near future...

A stationary front hangs across the South.
I-10 will be a messy drive often.

If a system forms in the Gulf of Mexico or down by the Yucatan ... well low pressure areas are attracted to low pressure and often a set up like this can cause a magnet set up that gets hit once by the stationary front and then again by a weak, early, tropical system.  And, sometimes something forms off the SE coast from the other side of said dead in the water stationary front when an area of weather "like" a tropical wave moves into that area. Lingering low pressure can spin up tropical or subtropical systems this time of year.

Nothing is there now, but models are suggesting there might be something in the end of May to watch in the Atlantic. And, as the Eastern Pacific aka EPAC Hurricane Season begins on May 15th it's more likely even something may try and develop there as we already have convection congregating in all the right places.

IF you didn't get a chance to go to one of the NHC events where they show off their flying machines and explain how everything works, there's a link below to enjoy that gives you a virtual tour.

As for tropical development.
Several factors to come together.
Keep watching.
But in the meanwhile watch out for Severe Weather.
The Tornado Season has targeted the Dixie Alley often.
And, I'm thinking......
...so will Hurricane Season!

Happy Mother's Day Weekend!
If you see hurricane supplies on sale somewhere.
Do what you gotta do...

Do You Already Have Hurricane Supplies ...And Not Remember Where You Put Them? NW Carib Might See Attempts at Tropical Development End of May.

From this we see EPAC is coming alive.
Lower Pressures in GOM
BOC
Both GOM & BOC are favorable for June.
This is May.
But looking ahead a bit.

With water temperatures hotter than normal.
We could have a late May/June 1st system.
Kind of a "hey, don't forget Hurricane Season"

Keeping this short today. Basic. Check your home for these supplies before you shop, as you never know what you'll find under the sink or in those hidden places you stash stuff and then forget about it. With cost of living an ongoing issue, it's hard to even think about buying hurricane supplies for a hurricane you doubt you'll ever have but many of these items are around so corral them into a place designated for Emergency, Hurricane Supplies before you even think on shopping.

2 Week Supply of any medicine, OTC or with Rx, that you should have on hand.
Especially ALLERGY meds as after a hurricane when there's rotting leaves & debris allergies go crazy.
First Aid Supplies
Put your extra pair of glasses in this spot in case yours break and you can't see without them.
Pillows, blankets, sleeping bags and put your flashlights in with that area.
Did I mention flashlights? Batteries, check if the old batteries work and corral them together.
Battery Powered Radio, Weather Radio.... there are many online with a crank you can crank for power.
Manual Can Opener, very important when the power is out for 3 weeks.
Ice Chest.... it'll keep the ice cold for a while but...without power it won't last long. Still good to have.
Games for children that can't use their Ipad, think crayons, puzzles and card games.
After a hurricane without power is a good time to teach them how to play poker :)
Speaking of children.......extra diapers is a must.
Baby Wipes are your friend even if you don't have children using diapers, you will thank me.
Fire Estinguisher.... accidents happen especially when ppl use candles and they do.
LOTS OF PAPER PLATES.... for those 3 weeks without power, don't worry on environment.
You may not have water to wash dishes so give to a green charity and use paper plates/cups/napkins.
Pretend you're camping but there's no stream nearby to wash the forks and spoons.
Bleach. Very important for disinfecting purposes.... more on that in later blogs.
Water... store water in used large soda bottles for washing, later fill bathtub for washing.
Buy bottled water cheap at the Dollar Store or anywhere you find it!
IF it's obvious you are in the path of a hurricane highway this year.... store some gas for emergency.
At some point during evacuations gas stations run out of gas.
If you have a grill that uses propane, keep it full.
Battery Powered Lamps work great and can often be found at the Dollar Store.
Battery powered Tap Lights are great for Emergency and a child afraid of the dark.
Bug Spray as mosquitos breed fast in standing water, you cannot imagine if you've never been through it.

Look around your house and figure out the safest place to ride out the storm.
Inner room or a room with the least windows.
Closets are good but not if they are near the front door.
Inner hallway, bathrooms and walk in closets are good.

There is a small chance that something may form in the NW Caribbean at the end of the month. That's a nebulous area so may I say forecasts for lowered barometeric pressures in that region at the SW edge of the High Pressure may need to be watched for Home Grown activity. The MDR out in the Atlantic is not ready yet for prime time even though the water is very hot.

Things often form in that region.
Or try and form.
So Florida, Yucatan.
NW GOM

Time will tell.
Far from now.

Now is your time to prepare.
And see how much you already have in the house.

24 Days Til Hurricane Season. EPAC Getting Primed For Development. Storms Over Areas Near Tennessee & Carolinas Today... Thoughts on May and the Bermuda High. Roofing Advice, Learn Before the Cane Hits!

Our side of the world above.

Old Mason Dixie Line area targeted today.
Huge High in place over parts of the Tropics.

If you're in the colorful part of this map.

Severe Weather...
..pay attn.

Note Florida is fairly dry.
More on that deeper into the blog.

And, deep in the SW Caribbean...
..and in the Eastern Pacific.
Tropical trouble could be calling.

Quick tour of the tropics and tropical possibilities.
This area has rudimentary spin.
Part of the basic gyre
Area came off Colombia.

This area is one region, both Carib and Pacific.
Storms form over Colombia.
Drift West this time of year.
Across Panama...
Ignite when they crash into EPAC energy.
IF....upper level supports development.

It's interesting to watch.
EPAC season begins May 15th

Radar image from the area.
Earthnull shows the set up.
Figure 8 sort of set up gyre.
Common for this area.
2 lil areas on either side.
You can see them if you zoom in.

As for the whole basin, there's lots of long shots to watch if you love to watch long shots vs sure things. Somewhere there's always a long range model running, delivering various long range possibilities that this time of year rarely happen. Off the SE coast sometimes something develops from an old front that went dead in the water. Other times something forms in the Gulf of Mexico from an old frontal boundary or just convection that sits over warm water and refuses to leave the area though that usually happens closer to June 1st. Much depends on air flow, wind shear is a killer to any tropical development. May Monsoons begin soon in South Florida and it's something hard to explain to those who never lived there.....   And, I'll be there in a few weeks so hope to get some good pictures. Favorite picture on Wikipedia below. Looks just like that!

Biscayne Bay turns green.
Sky turns black with a tingle of purple.
Miami May Monsoons.

Also the May Monsoons are watched as to how much rain we get there vs how little rain we get there. Dry Mays are said to favor tropical development, but the caveat is that the old research was especially done with regard to WNW tropical waves riding under a strong high pressure that anchors over the SE and much of Florida propelling hurricanes into the South Florida areaa. The stronger the High, the drier the May is and the current set up with the high pressure currently in place has worried many hurricane researchers and excited many hurricane chasers as that set up could develop this year. Time will tell and the time line on that is ending soon as we are now way into May. The clock is ticking.....

That's a fast flow from the Pacific....
...across Mexico towards SE/GOM
Enhancing the daily storms in Tennessee.
What starts in Tennessee flows into Carolinas.
The dark Navy Blue off Florida E coast....
High Pressure.

On a personal note I went to the Beach.
The Beach here usually means Wrightsville.
Willy aka Wilmington's beach...
Nothing like Carolina beaches, really.
Take that from a Miami Beach girl.
Miami Beach so much fun....
...beaches in Carolina real beaches.

Been wanting, needing to go to the beach for a while and yet I didn't want to go to the beach on a cloudy "meh" day as I needed to feel a real beach day. Strong, steady breeze, waves with blue skies and hot sun on my body. It was awesome and thanks to a busted forecast Tuesday changed over from storms to sun and Wednesday is now showing expected storms in the Carolinas. I don't mind chasing storms, I actually love that but talking REAL storms not drippy gray days that drain all the color from life and this time of year when seasons collide North Carolina is prone to crappy, meh gray days that hang and linger while waiting for rain that generally fizzles out and evaporates before hitting Raleigh. Long run on sentence and when we get days like that it's like one long run on gray day. I get it, it's a very difficult place to forecast weather for .... really.... honest, winter, spring or summer the forecast is often a bust. So you kind of go with "real time" observations and wait til you see how the day will shake out. But my husband and I had alternating days of appointments this week, but Tuesday was open and sunnier than forecat and so we took a drive to the beach. Awesome day at the beach as well as hanging out a bit in Wilmington a town I love a lot. A town that gets hit often by hurricanes. Wilmington has a great riverfront area to walk around, eat, drink and watch the sunset.

Anyway............that's it for today. Watch the storms across the Eastern half of the country, especially in the South where some could be problematic.

Will see.
Time will tell.
Stay tuned.

24 days Til June 1st!

As for my hurricane preparation thought of the day.
Roofing.

Mike has much info on his site ...
...on preparation and what to watch out for.
Explore his site and links.
https://www.doneriteroofinginc.com/

Anyone who has ever had a roof problem after a hurricane knows how hard is it to get a good, HONEST, roofer as construction people flood into the area like a storm surge of grifters and scammers mixed in with the good honest people trying to make some money. Know what to look for, what to watch out for and Mike's site has links to honest roofers like Done Rite Roofing and their site has much information you can use wherever you live in Hurricane country - if a tree crashes into your beautiful home or tiles take flight in the wind.

Lots of roofing advice, free to read on this great site. Knowledge is power. Knowledge saves you money, time and less stress!

Enjoy the next 24 days and use them wisely and hey if you decide to impulsively take off for the beach, do it! Sometimes ya gotta break loose from routine and seize the day and enjoy the breeze.
