Historical Hurricanes..... Analog Tales for Snow Canes

Hurricane Sandy at 8PM with a clear cut eye forming...

A beautiful image from the Canadian Hurricane Center above. Look at how big her cloud cover is as well as her intensely stronger storms. That's a storm about to go Cat 2!

The 8PM info from the NHC is as follows:

800 PM EDT...0000 UTC...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE SANDY WAS LOCATED
NEAR LATITUDE 18.7 NORTH...LONGITUDE 76.4 WEST. SANDY IS MOVING
TOWARD THE NORTH NEAR 14 MPH...22 KM/H. THIS GENERAL MOTION IS
EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT WITH AN INCREASE IN
FORWARD SPEED EXPECTED OVERNIGHT AND THURSDAY. A TURN TOWARD THE
NORTH-NORTHWEST AND A DECREASE IN FORWARD SPEED ARE EXPECTED ON
FRIDAY. ON THE FORECAST TRACK...THE CENTER OF SANDY WILL MOVE OVER
PORTIONS OF EASTERN CUBA OVERNIGHT...MOVE NEAR OR OVER THE CENTRAL
BAHAMAS THURSDAY AND THURSDAY NIGHT...AND MOVE NEAR OR OVER THE
NORTHWESTERN BAHAMAS ON FRIDAY.

SATELLITE IMAGERY INDICATES THAT MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE
INCREASED TO NEAR 85 MPH...135 KM/H...WITH HIGHER GUSTS. SANDY IS A
CATEGORY ONE HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON HURRICANE WIND SCALE.
ADDITIONAL STRENGTHENING IS POSSIBLE BEFORE THE CENTER REACHES
EASTERN CUBA...WITH SOME WEAKENING EXPECTED AS SANDY MOVES
OVER EASTERN CUBA. RESTRENGTHENING IS EXPECTED AFTER SANDY
MOVES INTO THE BAHAMAS.

HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 30 MILES...45 KM...FROM
THE CENTER...AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO
140 MILES...220 KM. AN AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT
IS CURRENTLY APPROACHING SANDY.

With all of the talk of Hurricane Sandy looking for snow in the North East, it's hard not to think back on other Hurricanes that made the trip north in October and become Snow Canes.

So, I looked around online while listening to Jimmy Buffett remind me there is no reasoning with hurricane season...

I see great minds think a lot, his just works faster :)  I went looking and came up with a few to think on while waiting for the next model runs to come out.

I came on that blog while looking for info on the October 29, 1693 Storm that I mentioned yesterday.

The Great Colonial Hurricane always comes to mind.

Click on the link above... this passage is from that link:

"Records for the 18th century are more complete, as the population of New England had dramatically increased. Thus, we can be quite sure that there were 11 hurricane-like storms in the 1700s. The most interesting year was 1782. In October of 1782, two hurricanes came up the coast and struck New England. The first hit on Oct. 8 and 9, causing heavy damage especially in the Providence, RI, area. The second October hurricane arrived 10 days later, striking the eastern Massachusetts area especially hard. This was a rare snow hurricane!"

See the reference to a "rare snow hurricane" and yes it is rare, but Sandy could also be such a storm after it transitions to a hybrid storm.

Googling the term Snow Cane brings you to other articles about other historical storms.

Happened. Will Happen Again.

A passage:

"The tropical cyclone brought blankets of snow to anywhere between New York and southern Canada when it became extratropical. The storm brought heavy rain across the Atlantic states and southern New England, until it became extratropical and brought snow instead, in some areas up to two to three feet (610-910 mm). This was the first observation of snow from a landfalling hurricane, but not the last; Hurricane Ginny of 1963 brought up to 18 inches (400 mm) of snow to portions of Maine. In addition to the immense amounts of snow, the Storm of October 1804 toppled fruit orchards everywhere. Thousands of fowl perished, and cattle and sheep died by the hundreds because of the frigid temperature. In total, the extratropical storm killed 9 people and caused at least $100,000 (1804 USD, $1.2 million (2005 USD) in damage."

Happened. Will Happen Again.

Look at how large a system Hurricane Sandy is and think on what would happen if that deep tropical moisture was to hook up with a wayward, strong, early snow storm... lots and lots of snow...

A good link for a Snow Cast is below:

For an old friend.. SNONUT...who always liked this song.. darn.. my voice does sound like that in ways.. way too high lol... great classic and it's true... Impossible Things Are Happening Every Day!

Hey, as I said before and I will say it again:

Happened. Will Happen Again.
Happened. Will Happen Again.
Happened. Will Happen Again.
Happened. Will Happen Again.

This season is almost over, but there is no reasoning with Sandy... she will do what she is going to do and a lot depends on that cold front that has not yet made its way across the country.

You can see it marching east on this loop. Enjoy the always great Jimmy Buffett tune while you watch!
