Karl Knocking on TS Status, Lisa Weak At Sea - A Look Back at Autumn Equinox and Hurricane History. I'm back..

This is the tropics on the day of the Autumn Equinox.

Often on the Autumn Equinox big Hurricanes make landfall.

Hurricane Hugo September 22, 1989

Hugo goes down in history as one of those famous Equinox Hurricanes.

Read any old book on Hurricane History.

You see the term "equinox storms"

Cyclones, storms or typhoons.

They were not so stuck on names then.

If it made landfall and created havoc it was a storm.

It destroyed the crops, killed lives .. put ships at the bottom of the sea.

They recorded them and worried on them.

That simple.

Note the quote from an old book from 1885.

The word equinox is highlighted for you...

Back in the day this was the way they prepared for Hurricane Season.

They ... Remembered September.

In history books they were often called Equinox Cyclones.

Most often West Indies Cyclones ...

..making landfall during the Autumnal Equinox.

... Hurricanes were Equinox Storms.

Or thought to be.

They weren't so wrong.

Truth is we knew so little back then.

But in ways they knew a lot.

They knew to watch for storms in September.

No hype on "peak of the season"

No graphics on TWC

No TWC

No NHC 

No NWS

NO satellites or radar imagery.

Before the Wright Brothers took to the air in NC...

...they flew in mid December not September!!

It's kind of awesome what old time meteorologists knew.

And what we know now breaks all bounds of imagination back then.

2016 we have no West Indies Cyclones making landfall.

In 1938 the New England famous hurricane made landfall.

I'm a big booster of the NWS.

They have incredible history pages.

Good info to learn from on more than if it's gonna snow.

So take advantage of their site.

Many online sites have good info as well.

So we had a wedding in Miami with no hurricane.

Skies were crazy... gray, then pink, then purple..

Thunder, lightning but it didn't rain.

Inside the room was bathed in pink, purple lights.

Palm trees, orchids and Latin music.

Today TD Karl is bucking TS status.

Karl is an Autumn Equinox Cyclone.

As Mike says... looks can be deceiving.

Karl is forecast to be a Hurricane in the North Atlantic.

Then turn extra tropical out at sea.

Take a look at Karl for yourself!

I agree with Mike.

Don't believe everything you read and looks can be deceiving.

It's forecast by NHC to be a hurricane.

Looks more than a Tropical Depression to me.

Expect an upgrade soon.

 That said Lisa is also forecast to go out to sea.

So the Atlantic is quiet ISH

In the Pacific it is not quiet.

Far to the right see all the cyclones ....

...Atlantic quieter

Their pain is oddly our gain.

We are safe, they are not.

So pray for those in the path of other cyclones.

In Miami on September 18, 2016

We had lots of weather but no hurricanes crashed the party.

And this September the Atlantic basin is fine, fine, fine.

Well unless Karl has any surprises like Julia had...

And we danced all night at the Miami Wedding.

Tropics quiet today but Hurricane Season is not over.

5 PM probably will show Karl a Tropical Storm.

Tomorrow I'll look around the basin.

The heads up back when for West Indies Cyclones.

Atlantic Basin Hurricanes making landfall.

Hurricane History is just as important...

..as talking about Tropical Storms on the map today.

We learn from history.

That is how they knew to watch for Hurricanes in 1885...

..way before satellite imagery, recon and radar.
