A Dysfunctional Tropical Disturbance aka The Two Faces of Emily
The problems of growing up with ADD are best illustrated by watching the tropical wave in the Atlantic trying to live up to it's potential. It still has great potential, however it's got a life ahead of it that is more westward bound than the models the other day projected for it. The longer it takes to form, the further west the models will go and we won't know anything more until she gets her act together.
I've heard "Emily" described as having a split personality on www.flhurricane.com which was accurate and a creative, entertaining way to describe what is really going on.
She has two centers fighting for dominance. It's that simple. This is sort of like the Two Faces of Emily here. One is tough and likes to party on the West Side of the City, has frequent temper tantrums and emotional outbursts. The other face is more prone to the East Side of Town, quiet, well organized and not one for a lot of make up. When the Wild Western part of her flares up the quiet Eastern part sleeps and then when the Western side gets tired and takes a break the gal on the East Side looks like a winner. They cannot continue this drama without one winning out or both of them losing the game. There is no Oscar in Emily's future unless her quiet Eastern side gets tough and fights for her life and goes for the gold.
At some point, this wave will develop and at some point I still think she will become a Hurricane. When is a good question and how is an even bigger question. Meteorologists are scrambling to play the "last storm that looked like this" game and trying to find clues on radar imagery, satellite imagery and with all the models available to figure out what will happen next. No one really knows.
As of this morning the GFL hit Miami, while other models recurved her out to sea. By this evening she will be hitting the Tampa area as she curves NW back across Florida. If she keeps going she will be hitting Tampico...
There really is no way of telling for sure until she does her part. So, I am giving this back over to her... to Emily... to do her part in this tropical drama. Any Lubavitchers reading this will see the humor here better than others.
Another way to look at this set up is a child with severe ADD who runs off after every stimuli she sees on the playground. She starts out on the swings, then she runs over to the slide, then she runs back to the swing, then she runs to the monkey bars, endless energy directed in every direction. A teenager who really WANTS to do good on her exams but she's tired and not in the mood to study and really just wants to go party for a little while and she's sure she will study when she gets back but suddenly it's 2 AM and she's asleep and oh well... she never did the homework, forgot to study... she got distracted by her own restlessness and inability to stay on track and focus on what she needed to do. She WANTED to get good grades, but she also wants to have fun. She's driving her poor mother and father crazy as they try to direct her restless energy into some form of creative pursuit and she gives up always to go run off to party.
A small note here of sadness to the sad silence of the voice of Amy Winehouse who will not be writing or singing any more songs with her amazing bluesy style that so many love to listen to. This song below has 11 MILLION hits and is counting, hurts to listen to it in a way because we knew this would happen. Her mother knew it would happen. Everyone did. But, Amy said "no, no, no" one too many times. She would study tomorrow. She would give up the drugs and partying tomorrow. Emily here is a lot like Amy, she just keeps telling the forecasters "No, no, no" and all the forecasters and all the models cannot get Emily to do something that only she is the one that needs to do herself and that is... get her act together.
Til then we will watch her trek west, west, west and we watch and wait and talk scenarios but at the moment am thinking Emily needs Adderall or some such ADD drug or a really good meteorological shrink.

As for me... had an amazing time last night at my son's "L'Chaim" which is an engagement party Chabad style. So wonderful to see kids moving on with their lives, going forward, taking chances and living life with gusto. It was a great night in the life of Mommy Meyer :) and watching his beautiful fiance and her great parents enjoy time with their family and friends celebrating life.
There's times to party and there's times to work. For some of us...that is an easy clear cut decision. For others... who often labor with ADD and other dysfunctional behavior they get distracted by all the things they cannot filter out that constantly beckon them and keep them from achieving all the things they can. The just can't say no, no, no to partying late at night and wasting their energy running off in different directions, ruining their health while never really getting ahead. Takes real strength to stop and be able to see there is a problem and get help, try like crazy to stay on track, go to class, do your homework, study for tests and keep going. To say YES, YES, YES and take on life by the horns.
It's Emily's time now to say Yes, Yes, YES I want to survive and become a big, bad hurricane. And, until she does... we are just gonna wait, wait, wait while she goes west, west, west.
Good luck to anyone raising children with learning problems, I've raised a few and it's not easy. Good luck to anyone living in a dysfunctional relationship with someone who doesn't want to grow up or deal with their problems... it ain't easy.
So... take care, have a good day, have a great day and enjoy life... and keep checking back here because I'm really hoping that Miss Emily here can drop the manners and tell the western half of her personality to hit the road Jack and get back on track with her date with destiny!!
